In August 2024, I had the privilege of being invited to Sandvik, a global mining engineering company, where I had the opportunity to present our aquaponics initiative based in Soweto to their CSI (Corporate Social Investment) and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) teams. Our discussion centered around how aquaponics could be a sustainable and scalable solution for food security, particularly in urban communities that face space and resource constraints. This meeting opened the door to meaningful collaboration on how business and environmental innovation can intersect to create lasting community impact.

The very next day, I met with members of the local community, where we began exploring how to implement aquaponics on a larger scale. The idea is to introduce this innovative farming technique as not only a solution to food security but also as a community-driven business. By empowering the local residents with the knowledge and skills needed to run aquaponics farms, we can create a self-sustaining ecosystem. This would not only provide fresh, organic produce but also foster entrepreneurship and job creation within the community.

As we work toward developing this initiative, the vision is to create a business model that supports local farmers while contributing to a greener economy. Partnering with companies like Sandvik that prioritize ESG principles could accelerate the expansion of this project. Together, we hope to set a precedent for how sustainable farming can thrive even in densely populated urban areas, offering a solution to food security while uplifting the community through business development and environmental stewardship
